The development of new processes for conserving energy in rotary kiln furnace production of ferronickel is discussed. Measures carried out to meet the need for reduction in energy consumption included: substitution of pulverized coal for heavy oil in the rotary dryer and the rotary kilns, use of exhaust gas from the electric furnace in a coal mill and a rotary dryer, raising the temperature of the calciners using the rotary kilns, increasing the pre-reduction ratio of Ni and Fe in ores in the kilns, improving the facility for sizing of ores, and advancing the operation of pelletizing from kiln dust. Institution of these procedures resulted in reduciton of electric power consumption by 20%.
